The Marble quarries on the Apuan Alps

The Marble Quarries are the particularly fascinating element of the Apuan Alps.

The Marble Quarries are the particularly fascinating element of the Apuan Alps.
It is from these quarries, famous around the world, that the precious white marbles for artistic works of great value and for the finishing of architectural buildings (floors, walls and furniture), are quarried.
Together with the White marbles, here are also quarried the "arabescati", the "brecce" and the "cipollini" (all veined marbles) to be used for several different purposes.

Whoever thinks the marble quarries in Versilia, thinks of Michelangelo, too, and who thinks of Michelangelo remembers also the quarries in Monte Altissimo, where the great genius of the Italian Renaissance quarried the marble for Pope Leone X.
At the center of this tradition, that continues to these days, from the Versilia quarries come the marbles that, in the most different ways, make precious government buildings, places of prayer, museums, gardens, public parks as well as commercial centers, airports and skyscrapers. Whoever decides to go closer to these marble quarries (famous those ones of Cervaiole at the Altissimo and Monte Corchia), cannot but be surprised at the wonderful - and at the same time terrible - landscape.
